2011 FCA Convention
CALL
FOR SUBMISSIONS
81st
Annual Convention of the Florida Communication Association
October
13-15, 2011
Four Points by
Sheraton Orlando Studio City, Orlando, Florida
2011
Convention Theme
Communication
& Community
The concept of
community is difficult to define and varies depending on our place in
the discipline and in society. Regardless of our perspective,
communication and community are intertwined: “Communication and
community grow in each other’s shadows; the possibilities of the one
are structured by the possibilities of the other” (Rothenbuhler, 1991,
p. 76). Communication scholars have studied this phenomenon
extensively, and we regularly incorporate it into our teaching and
service. Whether we explore community as a place, process, institution,
interaction, feeling, cognition, structure or other form (p. 65),
communication plays a central role in defining and creating community.
This year’s
Florida Communication Association Convention will explore this concept
through papers, workshops, panels and poster presentations that feature
any form of community. Submissions are invited that explore and examine
the intersection of communication and community, whether the
communities we seek to understand are in society, organizations,
relationships, classrooms, film, media, or cyberspace (virtual
communities). We are especially interested in work that seeks to
explore new configurations of community and the communication processes
that foster them. A broad interpretation of this theme is encouraged
and anticipated. The goal for this year’s program is to provide a
community for scholars to share their work and passion for
communicating about this topic.
